The Spiritual Companion Guidelines provide a framework of principles, skills, and professional standards that enable our people to support individuals’ spiritual and personal growth with compassion, integrity, and mindfulness.

The Heart of the Spiritual Companions Trust

These guidelines were developed by a group of 200 people from diverse backgrounds and faiths. Those of us inside the Spiritual Companions Trust do our very best to follow them.

Regularly connect with and experience the wonder and energy of existence — by whatever name you call it: God, Spirit, the Mystery, Goddess, Source …

Core Skills
Are grounded and centred in our bodies.
Can pause, still at will and become mindfully present.
Aware of the subtle sensations of connection.
Witness with compassion, in silence when appropriate.

Reflection
Self-reflect and manage our behaviour, health, and development with compassion, love and wisdom.
Are emotionally literate and transparent about our own processes.
Participate in ongoing peer support, actively seeking feedback.
Understand psychological challenges during spiritual emergence.
Take responsibility, apologise, forgive, and receive forgiveness.
Appreciate continual emergence and unknowing.
Possess an appropriate sense of humour.

Service
Enable safe and sacred space.
Provide a non-intrusive, welcoming, healing presence.
Listen with care and enable self-development.
Assert boundaries and intervene to stop abuse.
Celebrate diversity and different spiritual paths.
Engage socially and ecologically, honouring spirit in all beings.
Be aware of local resources.
Know limitations and refer appropriately.

  • Ask questions appropriately to ensure people feel safe and reassured.
